Garforth Town Man of Match: Mat Devlin (shown pictured)
The Garforth Town youngsters played well but it was always going to be a big ask to beat an Evo Stik side containing 10 first teamers! They simply had too much experience across the park. Having said that the Garforth boys matched them in terms of looking after the ball but were undone by inexperienced defending for the crucial first 3 goals. Hyde had the first chance of the match after 5 minutes with a ball over the top with ex Garforth Town striker David Brown, who looked as though he could have been offside, seeing his effort saved by 16 year old Garforth keeper Booth. Lady luck than sat alongside Hyde for the next 5 minutes as firstly a Fletcher pile driver from the edge of the box was stopped by a defender's arm - the penalty appeal fell on deaf ears. Then Garforth midfielder Callum Dobson, who had a fine debut, nut megs ex Leeds United pro Sanchez Payne on the edge of the box but is not awarded the free kick from Payne's illegal body check. The opening goal arrived on 12 minutes. A diagonal was played to Brown out wide to the right - there was little danger, Brown was just in the box but Garforth had sufficient recovery runners to deal with it - Garforth defender Chris Manning presumably thought otherwise and clattered into Brown to give away an unnecessary penalty. The second goal, arriving some 5 minutes later, was also derived from a situation of little danger. Again the Hyde forward gets in from a diagonal but again Garforth have sufficient recovery runners to deal with the situation. Young Garforth keeper Booth decides to race out from his line allowing the forward to slide the ball under him. Goal number 3 arrived on 20 minutes. Again lady luck was on Hyde's side - Payne caught Garforth's Dobson in possession by fouling him but the referee called play on - a cute ball in behind released Hyde forward Brown as the Garforth defender 'stepped up' when he would probably have saved the day if he had stepped back to keep goal side of Brown. Not a great deal between the teams for the rest of the 70 minutes - Hyde created say 6 or 7 chances to Garforth's 2 - but considering that Hyde had 10 first teamers and a 3 goal lead I would say that represents a good effort by the Garforth youngsters.
