With four experienced mainstay players missing from the starting line up (Manning, Archer, Etherington and Wealthall), Garforth Town started this match against the high flying, unbeaten Tadcaster Albion side with 3 under 16 players (Booth, O'Regan and Colley). Aware that under the circumstances they had a big task on their hands the boys rose to the occasion for the first 45 minutes. The first half goal scoring chances were four to each team - each having 3 full and 1 half chance - and surely on another day the Garforth boys would have returned to the dressing room at half time on equal terms - not 2-0 down! The first half was a good game of football and to the soccer purists it was perhaps a trifle irritating that it was slightly marred by Tadcaster's first goal on 6 minutes. From a short corner routine the Tadcaster full back delivered a ball into the Garforth 6 yard box. The delivery sailed high from a trajectory someone near to the perpendicular. Quite a few seconds later the ball landed with a thud, closer to a Tadcaster player than a Garforth player, and was duly dispatched into the Garforth goal. Where were the Garforth defenders to head it? Or better still the Garforth keeper to catch it? - on the 'blower' perhaps seeking permission from Air Traffic Control to deal with it before it landed? Gaforth then edged the next 30 minutes and Fletcher (twice) and Bradley both had good chances to force an equalizer. Tadcaster put the game to bed with a quality goal on 36 minutes. A loose Cuttle pass in the Tadcaster half was intercepted and played to the Tadcaster number 10 Tom Hullock - a fine prospect in my opinion and the Tadcaster man of the match - he quickly turned defence into attack and played a cute ball in behind Garforth centre half Devlin giving the Tadcaster striker enough space and time to beat Garforth keeper Booth. Tadcaster dominated the first 25 minutes of the second half - Garforth looked a little dispirited during this period - creating 3 or 4 good chances and it was no surprise when the third goal arrived from a header from a corner. The introduction of big 'Arry Croft and the switching of Raul Fletcher to midfield brought the game back into parity for the last 20 minutes and Croft scored a late consolation goal for the home team with an excellent edge of the box strike. All in all another decent display by the Garforth boys against a good Tadcaster outfit and excellent experience in their career development for the 3 young Garforth lads.
