A poor opening 20 minutes by the Garforth boys led to Stalybridge racing into a 3- 0 lead and Garforth with once again a team containing mostly youngsters must have feared for the worst - 3- 0 down away from home with 70 minutes still to play! From the off Stalybridge looked to get their pacey forwards 'in behind' and the strategy worked with all of the 3 early goals emanating from this game plan - either directly from the pass played in behind or from the resulting corner given away from such a pass. Garforth made a tactical change after the third goal switching the quick Harold Monkam to centre half from right back. It looks as though the switch paid off for Garforth went on to draw the remaining 70 minutes 2- 2! I made it approx 6 chances to nil to Stalybridge in the first 20 minutes and then approx 7 chances apiece over the remaining 70 minutes. Joe Colley pulled a goal back for Garforth on 29 minutes with a header from a short corner and then delivery by Connor Atkinson. As the game wore on Garforth's ability to keep possession and pass and move saw them start to take control of the game but the under pressure Stalybridge probably sealed the game on 65 minutes with another quick ball over the top after a Garforth attack broke down in the opponent's penalty box. Garforth scored a smashing second goal when Josh Prince, on his debut, fired a low cross across the box for Connor Atkinson to 'smash in'. There was still time for Stalybridge to have the final word with a 5th goal from... yes you've guessed it... a quick ball over the top. A good contest - well done to both teams and very pleasing from the Garforth Town perspective to see that 16 year old Dan Booth and Josh Prince and 17 year olds Elliott Cattle and Connor Atkinson all had super games.
