There were returns to the first eleven for Jack McCarthy, Chris Simpkins and Jay Davis, replacing Tim Robertson, Craig Tonkinson and Josh Greenhalgh. Dan Barrett was given a first start for the club, replacing Sinmi Oyebanji, and Ashley Preece was back in a more familiar midfield position. It was also a 50th club appearance for Liam Smith.
This was a much more fluent attacking performance from Garforth than that seen in much of Saturday's game, something already apparent when our first chance came about on 6 mins. Luke Mangham charging down the left and putting a low shot past the far post.
Barrett was relishing his chance and was a constant thorn in Selby's side. After 15 mins upon receiving the ball in the corner from Smith, his cross into the box was fumbled by Robins keeper Rob Zand under pressure from Mangham. The ball came out to Tawanda Rupere just outside who smashed low into the net.
Jay Davis was in typical opportunistic form and came close a couple of times shortly after, shooting just wide from Mangham's throw-in and then making a jinking run inside and bringing a save from Zand.
The home side committed to a passing game throughout, but were often caught in possession and failed to register a shot on target in the first half. Ben Hunter was called into action on 35 mins to claim a dangerous ball in from Alex Horsman. and a free kick by Chris Dickman in a dangerous position a minute later was dealt with by the Town wall.
Davis almost made it 2-0 just before half time in similar style to his second at Heanor in the last round - attempting to lob a wandering Zand but the keeper managed to recover and palm his chip wide. Barrett almost had his first Town goal moments later from Rupere's corner but Zand got down well to turn his powerful shot out to safety.
Rather than their traditional red strip Selby had opted for a Real-Madrid away style all-black in the first half. The second period saw them emerge in a flourescent apple-green shirt, presumably to avoid further colour clashes with referee Ashley Guest.
A break forward on 50 mins saw Andy Hawksworth deliver to Mangham at the far post but the striker blazed over. Two mins later the home side had their best chance of the game when Chris Jackson beat two defenders and and forced a good save from Hunter, the ball finding Craig Muirhead who's shot was blocked by Smith amid appeals for handball which were waved away.
Another chance fell to Barrett when Ashley Preece's ball forward was missed by a defender but Barrett couldn't get his shot away. He recovered however and forced a block from Liam Stonehouse for a corner.
On 58 mins Davis finally had his goal after being picked out by Barrett; his drive from 20 yards squeezing past Zand and into the bottom corner. Despite his spell at Bradford Park Avenue he remains our top scorer in cup competitions with six goals.
Spencer Lund almost made it 3-0 on 63 mins, volleying a Simpkins corner inches over the bar. Despite Davis' eye for a long range strike Zand continued to venture off his line but to be fair he wasn't one to be lobbed from long distance and on 67 mins managed to get back to his line to gather another chip from Davis after being put through by Hawksworth.
The home side had to be thankful to their keeper again on 70 mins when he denied Rupere with a crucial challenge at the edge of the box. And he was there again six mins later, saving a fierce effort from Mangham after a solo run from the left.
At the other end Hunter pulled off another save against his former club, denying a Muirhead strike on 80 mins and six mins later some good work by Rupere saw him find Mangham but his shot was deflected wide.
The final chance of the game fell to Jason Crisp for the North Yorkshire side from a defensive clearance but shot well over.
A comfortable and confidence-boosting win to see us through to the fourth round, and hopeful inspire some improved form in the league.
