The Manchester side powered themselves into the next round with some top-class finishing worthy of any game. Whilst it was a closer contest than the scoreline suggests, Heys simply wanted it more against the lacklustre Miners who are capable of much better.
Town had a mountain to climb with only five minutes on the clock. In Heys’ very first attack they opened the scoring; Chris Baguley finding the top corner with a fine finish from just outside the box. Moments later, Rio Wilson-Heyes, who’d provided the assist for the first, was allowed to work his way in from the left and make it 2-0 with another top corner strike which Toby Wells could do little about.
Garforth sprung into action and Devonte Morton had a curling shot claimed by Michael Smith in the Prestwich goal. We got one back on 15 mins when Niah Payne and Shaquille Clarke-Adams exchanged passes on the right, Clarke-Adams finding the net with a deflected shot off the inside of the far post. Mark Ferguson then forced a good stop from Smith after a one-two with Morton put him through.
The home side had chances to extend their lead, captain Jacob Wood was unlucky on 24 mins when his header from Max White’s corner kick came off the far post. His team-mate Wilson-Heyes came close seconds later when he was again allowed to come in from the left and put a low shot narrowly wide. Back down the other end of the park and Albert Ibrahimi chipped just wide from Declan Greene’s long pass, before Ferguson was inches away from connecting with Morton’s left wing cross into the area.
Six minutes into the second period, Wells claimed a Lee Bruce strike after a move down the left, then a good run by Clarke-Adams ended in Smith keeping the midfielder’s low effort out of the corner. On 54 mins it was 3-1 when Wilson-Heyes received the ball on the left of the penalty box and finished well into the far corner for his second of the game. Four minutes later though Town reduced the arrears once more from Payne’s corner; Smith parried Ferguson's effort straight to Greene who slid the ball home for his first club goal.
On 61 mins Rob Hunter made a double substitution, Aodhan Brownlee and Helmo Silva replacing Greene and Sean Keyes.
There was another chance for Clarke-Adams two minutes later, but his shot on the outside of the box was well-over. The turning point of the game came with Heys’ fourth on 66 mins, and from then on Garforth never really threatened. With the Town defence again standing off, Lee Grimshaw worked his way into the box and found Jordan Icely who beat Wells from close range.
The woodwork was again disturbed on 69 mins when Baguley rifled off the underside of the crossbar after being played in from the right. Seven minutes later it was 5-2 when Wells couldn’t keep out White’s powerfully struck free-kick. The final goal arrived on 79 mins when Jacob Holt rifled into the roof of the net from 25 yards. The last five minutes almost saw further goals when Wood headed over the bar White’s free-kick, before Daniel Warburton put a free header off target when it looked easier to score.
After a disappointing week in cup competitions, it's back to the league for Rob Hunter’s men next Saturday when we visit Bottesford Town (kick-off 3pm).
