The first half was fairly even, both sides looked to attack but lacked quality in the final third. Our hosts had most of the ball early on, Mitchell Pearson shot wide on 8 mins after the ball was given away at the back and a minute later Ben Hunter pulled off a good save to keep a Brook Newton drive from finding the top corner.
Danny Harris provided our first shot on goal on 18 mins when he charged down the middle and shot from the edge of the box but straight at Sedge's vocal keeper Samuel Dobbs. A couple of mins later a decent move down the right from Andy Hawksworth's quickly taken free-kick saw Sinmi Oyebanji play inside to Mark Fereday who could only shoot over the bar.
Down at the other end ex-Garforth striker Frank Zalo tested Hunter from a narrow angle on 23 mins. On 29 mins Kieran Corley was guilty of missing a sitter when getting on the end of a dangerous ball in from Pearson, but could only skew wide from a few yards out.
On 34 mins Oyebanji almost grabbed his first goal of the season from Fereday's knockdown but was denied by Dobbs. More good work from the Nigerian and Luke Mangham four mins later saw Dobbs spill the ball and it finding its way out wide, but was delivered back in to Spencer Lund who chipped over the bar.
Another hairy moment at the back came five mins before the break, Hunter doing well to deny Corley after he broke clear.
Initially the second half continued the same as the first, The Miners with a passing game down the flanks and the Cleckheaton side looking for the long pass into the box, but luckily for us without a Cusworth-esque figure to aim for we saw on Saturday at Maltby. Mangham was again denied by Dobbs on 55 mins after being put through by Oyebanji, the keeper just nipping in to collect.
Hunter was there again to deny Corley a minute later with an excellent tip over the bar.
A double substitution in 59 mins was made, giving us a little extra up front over our opponents. Callum Cheetham and new signing Emmanuel Ajayi replacing Fereday and Jassim Alali.
Sedge wasted another glorious chance on 76 mins when a searching ball into the box found Andrew Wood (?) in space who could only head wide.
Three mins later Mangham came even closer when his well-struck free-kick almost flew into the top corner but Dobbs pulled off an equally good save to keep it out. The assembled crowd had had to wait patiently for an opener, and it finally arrived a minute later. And what a nice moment it was too. A short-corner from Mangham saw Tim Robertson do brilliantly to pick out Jack McCarthy in the box who rose highest to head powerfully home past Dobbs for his first ever Garforth goal.
Four minutes later the points were made safe when Zalo gave the ball away in the centre of the park to Mangham who raced through the defence to plant the ball over a grounded Dobbs and into the net.
One last chance came for the home side in injury time when a Corley cross in from the right found sub Eli Hey in space who volleyed past the far post.
A hard-fought game in which Graham's young side were eventually rewarded for a patient approach, finally sealing a first away victory in eight attempts.
