The visitors were the better side for most of the first half, enjoying much of the possession and attacking Garforth at pace. After 3 mins Nathan Smyth shot just past the far post after receiving the ball outside the box.
Town's first chance came four minutes later when a Jack McCarthy effort was deflected and brought a save from Barton keeper Ben White. The away side continued to create most of the chances however and a good spell afterwards saw Bradley Ricketts shoot powerfully at Ben Hunter and then on 13 mins The Miners' keeper denied Louis Kirk. Corey Mortimer came close six mins later after beating McCarthy on the right, cutting inside and putting a curling effort inches over the bar.
Garforth tried to play football but were lacking the final ball. Some good play in the middle by Sam Akeroyd on 30 mins however ended in Tawanda Rupere shooting just wide. A dangerous moment came just a minute later down the other end though when Scott Phillips' strike from a narrow angle was parried out by Hunter to Mortimer, the ball was delivered back to the far post but some good defending denied Phillips from getting a header in.
Meanwhile the team started to link up a bit better up front; on 35 mins a superb ball forward from Andy Hawksworth picked out Joel Barnett in the box, but White was there to deny him. Only three mins later though The Swans made their superiority count when Ashley Lattimore went forward, beat McCarthy and half-volleyed in past Hunter at his near post.
Controversy then ensued just before half time. Phillips was lucky to stay on the field after cynically raising his arm at Jassim Alali as he ran past him in the middle of the park. Referee Nick Hawksby opting only for a yellow card.
Into the second period and Barton continued to create the best chances, a dangerous ball in from Chris Gowen had to be cleared out by Alali and then a Sam Belcher free kick on 51 mins saw an unmarked Phillips head just wide.
At this point Town were struggling to really pressure their physical opponents and supporters started to wonder where a goal might come from. But the visitors remained only one goal up and on 73 mins a moment of individual brilliance started to tip things in our favour. Luke Mangham received the ball in midfield, charged past a couple of defenders and finished well with a low strike into the bottom corner.
The confidence was finally returning and only two minutes later the game was completely turned on its head. More good work from Mangham on the left saw him cut inside to Barnett in space who fired into the net over the head of a defender for a first goal in "sunshine and cobalt".
The last ten minutes saw some hairy moments for the home crowd - on 83 mins a good ball into the box was cleared to Ricketts who saw his strike brilliantly blocked by Liam Smith. Gareth Barlow then shot inches wide of the far post after receiving a clearance from a corner kick. A couple of chances then came Barnett's way at the other end in a two minute spell towards the end, shooting wide after being supplied by Rupere and then receiving another great ball from Mangham but shooting wide again.
One more heartstopping event happened in four mins of injury time when another dangerous ball in was cleared by Smith straight at Hunter who kept the ball from going in with a smart reflex save. Despite the pressure the North Lincs outfit couldn't find an equalizer and The Miners had done enough for a much-needed victory. Its fair to say we weren't at our flowing best and rode our luck at times, but a spirited display all the same against a good side previously unbeaten against us.
