The best of the early chances came to Athersley - two minutes in Callum Mackie broke clear and brought a stop from Ben Hunter and five mins later the same player picked up a loose ball and crossed in Anthony Mackie who shot wide. On 10 mins Hunter was called into action again when Josh Moore evaded Andy Hawksworth's challenge but was able to gather his weak shot.

Garforth weren't out of the game though and started to carve out some good attempts of their own. A superb through ball on 11 mins from new signing Mark Fereday to Luke Mangham on the right saw him venture into the area but was stopped in his tracks by some good defending and away keeper Neal May.

The game was evening out and on 17 mins a loose ball from a corner at the opposite end found Moore again who forced an awkward save from Hunter. Just after the 20 minute mark came Town's best two attempts of the half, a Tim Robertson strike from a narrow angle crashing off the frame of the goal and shortly after a Mangham header from a Hawksworth ball in forcing an excellent save from May to tip over the bar.

Callum Mackie looked set to put the visitors ahead on 28 mins when sent through by Rickie Popplewell with only Hunter to beat but could only shoot harmlessly wide. Both teams were organised at the back despite the mist and chances were limited for the rest of the half. The last one fell to Garforth when Robertson made a great run down the left to supply Tawanda Rupere, the Penguins' keeper saved at his feet but the ball sprang loose to eventually find Fereday who could only fire wide.

On 53 mins Jack Briscoe nearly grabbed the opener when latching onto a defensive header and beating Rupere but fired wide from a tight angle. Another break for the Barnsley side two mins later saw Moore thwarted by a last-ditch clearance from Craig Laight.

The match could still go either way and was increasingly looking like one in which a goal would settle it. A decent break for us on 61 mins involving Mangham, Fereday and substitute and new signing Callum Cheetham saw Fereday shoot straight at May. At the other end moments later Hunter pulled off another fantastic save, tipping over Moore's point blank header from Popplewell's delivery.

Both teams just needed a moment of magic on front of goal and luckily for us it was Tim Robertson who supplied it. Picking up the ball from a throw in 35 yards out he delivered a spectacular strike into the top corner. It was a true wonder goal which capped off some accomplished performances in the last few games.

In a game which was hitherto played in good spirit our visitors reacted badly to the setback and pretty much straight from kick-off Callum Mackie was shown a straight red for a two-footed challenge on Robertson.

On 81 mins Robertson almost had a second when his curling free kick was pushed away by Neal and shortly after Fereday came close to a debut goal when picked out by sub Sinmi Oyebanji but curled just over the bar. Town were now in the ascendancy and Oyebanji almost grabbed one for himself after the visitors couldn't clear their lines but was denied on the byeline by defender Ryan Blackburn.

Some unpleasant scenes ensued at the final whistle but the points went to The Miners in a determined and hard-working display.
