Town emerge from Siege of Sandy Lane with a point....

In the win over Worksop at Wheatley Park last month, Head Coach Graham Nicholas employed a deep-defending, counter-attacking approach and simply employed it again; meaning the lions' (or tigers'?) share of the evening's chances fell to the home side. The first one came from a Worksop corner seven minutes in, Conor Sellars playing in Tom Burgin who blazed over the bar.

One opportunity that did come our way was on 10 mins when Tawanda Rupere shot well wide from 25 yards under pressure from Tigers' captain Jake Scott.

On 20 mins a free-kick from a dangerous position on the 'D' saw Sellars fire just over. By this time the Nottinghamshire side had already won a number of corners and one after 26 mins saw Sinmi Oyebanji clear an inswinging cross off the line. Andy Ofosu brought a good save from Hunter on 34 mins with a turn and low shot after receiving the ball from Burgin on the right. Another free-kick four mins later saw Hunter tip Sellars' rising drive onto the crossbar. The Garforth stopper was in need of a confidence boost and can be pleased with his overall performance.

Town's best effort came just before the break and it was Rupere again when some good play down the middle from Tim Robertson and Sam Jones saw him fire just over the bar from a narrow angle.

Four mins into the second half Scott came close with a low effort from just outside the box which went narrowly wide after the ball was given away by Jassim Alali. Conor Higginson was unlucky not to put The Tigers ahead when his great strike from distance swerved wide of the post. The hosts' best chances had mostly come from set-pieces though and another corner on 62 mins saw Burgin put a powerful volley just over the bar.

The introduction of Chris Whincop and Adam Ward boosted Worksop's attack but it still struggled to find a way past the resolute Town defence who had bravely blocked everything and cleared forward or to safety if required. On 70 mins the two subs combined for Ward to smash wide from just outside the box. In something now resembling a siege Garforth were well and truly pinned in their own penalty box. Any remaining fingernails amongst the small band of away supporters were surely no more two mins later when Hunter parried Whincop's shot out to Higginson who forced another goal-line clearance but thankfully into the stranded keeper's arms.

Whilst playing attractive football our promotion-chasing opponents had thus failed to score against us in 174 mins, but were given their golden chance six minutes from the end when Liam Smith fouled Tom Elliot in the area and referee David Benton pointed to the spot. Amid the frustration showed at times by his side Kyle Jordan kept his nerve to send Hunter the wrong way for what would surely be the winner.

Further pressure followed but heads didn't drop. A secret weapon had been introduced five minutes before the goal in the form of Mark Simpson. A ball forward on 87 mins saw him steal in between defenders and show similar coolness to chip an onrushing Jonathan Stewart for an unlikely equaliser.

Negative and anti-football to some, but the promotion chasers needed a last-gap penalty to claim one point from two encounters with the plucky Miners who left the field to applause from supporters and rewarded with a spirited draw.
