The majority of the chances in the first half came Barton's way with striker and league top scorer Scott Phillips the biggest danger. Only two minutes in he received a forward ball and shot over the bar from a narrow angle. A free kick was awarded just outside the box four mins later amid home appeals for a penalty arguing the foul was committed inside it. Ashley Lattimore delivering the ball across the six yard box to Phillips who skewed wide.
The wind and a hardly, bobbly pitch made it a difficult afternoon for both sides. Barton were winning most of the aerial battles whilst Garforth were most effective on breaks forward using the pace of Luke Mangham and Mark Simpson. Our first chance came on 12 mins when Mangham broke clear of the defence to shoot wide, and soon after Simpson did well to win the ball from Sam Belcher but similarly could only find the advertising hoardings.
Danny Norton came close for The Swans from a corner on 16 mins, his low effort bringing a save from Ben Hunter. Five mins later another free kick ended in captain Ashley Dexter heading past the far post. The Miners' best chance of the half fell to Simpson on 30 mins when Mangham's free kick saw him shoot straight at keeper Rick Watson from close range.
Louis Kirk missed a glorious chance for the home side a few minutes later; heading wide Corey Mortimer's delivery from the flank. Town have developed a habit of conceding just before the break recently, but to be fair it was a deserved lead for the North Lincolnshire side. On 42 mins a delivery into the box was blocked by Liam Smith who looked to have been fouled, the loose ball falling to Bradley Ricketts about 20 yards out who half volleyed superbly into the top corner. The lead could've been doubled on the stroke of half time after a poor kick out by Hunter, but he recovered well to stretch and keep out the resulting shot from finding the bottom corner.
A quiet start to the second half was eventually livened up around the hour mark by the introduction of Nick Black and Sinmi Oyebanji (for Simpson on 54' and for Liam Smith on 64'). The two players made an immediate impact with their directness; Black harrying defenders and Oyebanji causing problems with his forays down the wing. Garforth then had their best spell of the game, one which ended in our equaliser. An excellent ball in from Spencer Lund on 66 mins found Black who shot agonizingly past the far post. Moments later sub Liam Royles nearly grabbed his first goal for the club when put through by Oyebanji on the left, his low shot forcing a hurried clearance for a corner. It was then that Black reminded us all of his quality with his first goal in nearly three months on 69 mins. Mangham's delivery finding him at the far post to deliver a powerful header beyond Watson and into the net.
The home side then had their own spell of pressure with Hunter called into action twice around the 72 min mark; firstly saving Lattimore's wind-assisted free kick from just outside the box and then tipping a long range strike from Chris Gowen over the bar. Phillips probably should've given the Swans the lead once again on 80 mins after receiving the ball from Ricketts 10 yards out but blazed over. One minute later he did find the net after breaking clear and beating Hunter but the offside flag was raised.
The final chance of the game fell Garforth's way when Mangham whipped in a free kick to Lund in the box but he headed onto the roof of the net.
An improved showing overall on recent displays from Graham Nicholas' young charges and a good point from a tricky away game. Two Town supporters attended yesterday's game in a camper van, a very appealing idea given our next game; 20 miles north of the Euronics Ground at Bridlington Town on Tuesday.
