After suffering late disappointment in Wednesdays' county Cup final, the Miners had to pick themselves up and try to end their season on a high at Athersley.
As expected, there were a number of changes to the starting eleven, Tim Robertson, Spencer Lund, Liam Royles and Mark Simpson all began the game.
Athersley looked to capitalise on any jaded start from the Miners and raced to a two goal lead within just seven minutes.
First Ryan Smith put a shot beyond Ben Hunter on three minutes, before Scott Alcock furthered Garforths' misery with a finish from close range four minutes later.
Garforth reacted well though. Nick Black, who was a handful all afternoon, soon gave them a lifeline. Latching onto a through ball, he raced to beat goalkeeper Neal May to the ball and prodded his effort into an empty net.
Soon after, Luke Mangham did brilliantly on the edge of the box to fashion a half chance for himself and was unlucky to see his effort hit the top of the far post and bounce to safety.
The rest of the half was played at a relentless pace as both teams searched out another goal, but couldn't find the finish.
The second half had little flow to it and turned into a scrap with the home side questioning every refereeing decision and more. Perhaps Liam Smith eventually lost his cool late on and a robust challenge saw him red carded in the eighty fifth minute.
The game may have petered out into a disappointing defeat against a side that are always tough to play, but there was no questioning the final day commitment from the men in purple.
