The first half was pretty much all Bridlington who had nearly all the possession and were stroking the ball around nicely. On 6 mins Chris Adams struck wide after making a run down the left and on 13 mins Paul Hagreen was called into action, saving a shot from the edge of the box by Connor Harman. Craig Hogg missed an excellent chance on 20 mins after the ball was worked across the box and then to him in the middle, smashing over the crossbar.
Garforth were again limited to breaks forward using the pace of Luke Mangham and Mark Simpson, with Sinmi Oyebanji a useful option down the wing. Our first couple of real chances around 25 minutes in however were the closest yet produced for either team. Simpson tested Brid keeper James Hitchcock after winning the ball on the right, the loose ball being pounced on by Mangham who shot narrowly wide via a deflection. The resulting corner was whipped in by Oyebanji to Mangham who was unlucky to see his glancing header hit the post.
Town had gained a foothold in the game but were struggling to keep hold of the ball. We were also forced into a change on 27 mins after Liam Smith had taken a couple of knocks and had to be replaced (although very ably it should be said) by Ashley Preece. The Seasiders remained dangerous up front but their good play was lacking the finish. This all changed on 41 mins however when they took the lead. From a throw in on the left the ball was played to Adams who drilled into the far corner of the net.
Their lead didn't last long though as The Miners were quick out of the blocks after the break and within a minute found an equaliser. An excellent one-two between Simpson and Mangham saw Simpson put through to slot the ball past Hitchcock.
The East Yorkshire side came close to restoring their lead shortly after when Adams won a challenge in the box with Jack McCarthy to set up Hogg at the far post who blazed wide.
The second half proved to be a more evenly contested affair and on 50 mins a good run from Mangham saw him pass inside to Tawanda Rupere who shot straight at Hitchcock. Down at the other end moments later Hagreen pulled off a good save to deny Ashley Allanson's powerful 20-yarder. On 56 mins it was 2-1 to the hosts, courtesy of a goal a number of the small band of Garforth supporters were not well placed to see. A corner on the left was headed down into a sea of players, apparently to Tom Fleming who flicked the ball into the net from close range.
Three minutes later Fleming came closer to scoring another when shooting over from just outside the box. On 67 mins a decent run forward by Rupere forced Hitchcock into another save, turning his low shot wide. Oyebanji was giving the Brid defence a fright down the right and a minute later put a good ball in to Danny Harris at the far post who headed wide.
In the last 20 mins subs Jarrod Smalley and Lewis Poucher started causing the Garforth defence problems of their own and on 76 mins the two combined but Hagreen was there to collect Poucher's header. Six minutes later the same man found the side netting after being supplied from out wide.
Town were still looking to get forward and in the final minutes a couple of corners were forced which sadly came to nothing. Two of Garforth's own subs came close to a late point with a glorious opportunity in injury time. Emmanuel Ajayi made a powerful run through the defence and picked out Chris Simpkins at the far post who headed inches wide.
A brave showing from The Miners against a good side but ultimately in vain. Saturday sees us return from our travels to Wheatley Park for the visit of Handsworth Parramore, kick-off 3pm.
Sadly no video highlights for this one as Jon couldn't make the game.
