Captain Dan Coupland made a welcome return to the first eleven, replacing Tabish Hussain who took a knock on Wednesday night at Albion and was named as a substitute. Alex Zachariou started ahead of Kieran Clayton and Sam Denton replaced an unavailable Jamie Barkway. Also on the bench was fullback Jack McGahan who returned to the club recently after leaving for Campion in summer last year.
On one hand, Garforth made hard work of it given the number of chances created, but on the other, similar to the victory over Campion the other week, showed character in spades when the game threatened to slip away from them.
Prior to kick-off there was a minute's applause for long-time Town supporter Andy Kilbride who sadly passed away recently.
Only two minutes in Barton centre-forward Sam Cable escaped with a caution after a bad challenge on Harry Flatters. The action soon went to the other end of the field with Nash Connolly seeing a shot deflected just over the bar after Sam Barker forced a poor kick-out from Swans keeper Ryan Musselwhite. Jordan Emery was then denied twice by Musselwhite before another Connolly effort was blocked by a defender when Barker headed down a right wing cross. On 22 mins Barker was denied by more resolute defending after Connolly had done brilliantly to pick him out. Soon after Harry Viggars' towering header from Connolly's corner kick went inches over the bar.
In one of only a couple of first half chances for the visitors, Tom Waudby saw a shot deflected just wide after latching onto a long ball forward.
Connolly was then denied by a superb last-ditch challenge from Clark Greaves after more link-up play with Barker, then one more chance in the half down the other end saw a Will Waudby free-kick almost drift into the far corner, but in the end the wrong side of the upright. It was then Musselwhite's turn to the keep the score level when he made a cracking save to keep out Barker's header from Connolly's corner.
Tom Waudby headed just over the bar on 47 mins, but the Garforth pressure soon resumed as the rain started to fall. Dan Coupland's 25-yard drive was well-saved, before the captain had another go with a low shot which Musselwhite palmed wide; Connolly got to it, but slipped on the ball as the Barton goal lived a charmed life. A counter-attack down the left resulted in another Connolly chance; he beat the last man but shot wide at the near post.
On 55 mins there were appeals for a penalty when a Barton defender looked to have handled, but the referee waved play on. Connolly was then denied by another last-ditch challenge when supplied by Emery. As has often been the case so far this season, Town's lack of killer instinct was punished on 66 mins. Miscommunication between Denton and Flatters let in Cable who finished low past the stranded keeper to give the Swans an unlikely lead.
Happily for home supporters The Miners kept their heads and didn't allow the visitors to pile on the pressure in search of another. Coupland was denied again by Musselwhite with a low drive after Barker looked to have been fouled in the build-up. Nine minutes after going behind Town were level through a well-worked goal. Connolly made his way down the left and picked out Emery in the box. Emery cleverly backheeled to Barker who finished low into the net.
Seeking to haul his side back into the lead, Barton manager Nathan Jarman brought himself on eight minutes before time, only to be sent to the sin-bin two minutes later for words said to the referee. He was to re-enter the field deep into the seven minutes of injury time, by which point Garforth had scored the winner. At least he could console himself with winning the football card in the clubhouse after the game.
Which of course brings us to the entrance of Town legend Lee Turner who replaced Denton on 83 mins, and within two minutes finally put the game to bed. Reading Connolly's delivery before, quite possibly, everyone else in the stadium, he slid in to beat Musselwhite and score his 36th goal. A brilliant ending to the game for a player who time and again has answered the call in times of need, and after 176 appearances continues to play a part.
Paul Marshall's side look to make it four wins from four at home when we host Penistone Church tomorrow (kick-off 7:45pm).
