There was one change to the team which defeated Silsden on penalties in midweek, captain Dan Coupland returning to the first eleven after having to miss that one due to illness. Fullback Alex Zachariou, who deputised in midfield, took a seat on the bench.
The visitors almost took the lead in a matter of seconds when Buddy Cox won an aerial battle on the edge of the box and brought a save from Harry Flatters with a low strike.
The first Garforth chance arrived on 13 mins when we won the ball back on the edge of the area and Charlie Marshall put a teasing cross in which a slding Nash Connolly was inches away from connecting with. Good work from the latter and Dan Coupland soon after though produced Town's opener on 19 mins. Coupland found space through the middle and played in Connolly who controlled and finished well across Golcar keeper Samuel Kelly. In a tense first half there was only a handful more chances of note. George Doyle put a low shot just wide when supplied by Slater Barkham-Barnes to his right on 26 mins, Kelly spared the blushes of Kiero Lawrance who sliced Jay Davis' delivery goalbound, then on 40 mins Sam Barker came close with an effort which Kelly did well to turn wide of the far post.
On 55 mins Marshall looked well-placed to double our lead after Davis chased a seemingly-lost cause and found the midfielder via Connolly's dummy, but his shot was too close to the keeper. That was a chance from nothing, and two minutes after that was a goal from nothing that arguably settled the match. A stranded Kelly completely misjudged a long ball forward, allowing Barker to go past him and sidefoot into the empty net. Connolly nearly grabbed a second to make it 3-0 after more good work by Barker, but his effort went just beyond the far post.
"Impact subs" turning a game in Town's favour have been a key feature of recent home matches, and Sam Denton added himself to the list within seconds of replacing Marshall on 75 mins. Going straight upfield for Jordan Emery's corner, the centre-back got on the end of it with a diving header to make it 3-0. It was a welcome return to the scoresheet for "Dents" who scores his first since the League Cup Semi-final win over Grimsby Borough in April last year.
Brilliant work from another sub in Lee Turner almost led to a fourth; picking out Barker from the right, Barker's shot hit the foot of the post and the visitors managed to clear. Matt Antcliff and Turner then saw efforts denied in the box as the visitors scrambled to keep the score to three. Lee Bradshaw came close to a consolation in added time with a low strike which was inches wide of the near post.
A seventh match unbeaten for Paul Marshall's side who hit the road next Saturday when we pay a visit to Maltby (kick-off 3pm).
