Garforth put another 3 points on the board with victory over struggling Goole AFC at the Bannister Prentice stadium yesterday.
Jamie Barkway was the unlikely hero of the afternoon as the centre half popped up with a brace to extend the winning streak of Paul Marshall’s side to 4 in a row.
The Miners had the first scoring opportunity of the game. Sam Barker was played into the area by Charlie Marshall where he forced a save out of Dylan Hough at his near post, before a Alex Zachariou rebound was blocked and cleared.
Garforth took the lead from a corner 20 minutes into the match. After Dan Coupland’s header from the initial set piece was parried, Jamie Barkway was left free to turn the ball home on the line.
Our lead was nearly doubled shortly after as Matt Ancliff’s first time effort from close range went narrowly over the bar, after the ball was cut back across the box from the byline.
Garforth’s deliveries into the area were troubling the visitors, and Marshall was later picked out at the far post but his header was caught comfortably by Hough.
Harry Viggars was next to go close for the Miners, finding himself in a good area with the ball inside the box but his powerful strike flew well over the bar.
Jordan Emery’s left footed shot forced another good stop out of the opposition’s ‘keeper, before Goole travelled up the other end and looked to trouble our goal for the first time, but Daniel Ward fired over.
HALF TIME: Garforth Town 1 – 0 Goole AFC
The referee blew to commence the second half and it didn’t take long for the Miners to get going.
Ancliff was released down the right wing before he burst into the area and tried his luck at the near post, but his shot was pushed wide.
However, the resulting corner that Antcliff sent in was met by Barkway, who rose highest to nod in both his and Garforth’s second of the match.
Marshall had a great opportunity to add to his goal tally after a defensive error set the striker in on goal, but his attempt to lift the ball over the ‘keeper was saved well and he sent a second effort wide.
Barker also came close to putting the ball in the back of the net but unfortunately his header fell just short, after the midfielder had his initial shot saved by the feet of Hough.
Harry Flatters was later called into action and made a fantastic save to deny Ben Rossiter, who flashed a shot back across goal after being found unmarked at the near post, before Sam Thompson misplaced the follow up and the opportunity to drag Goole back into the game.
And that proved to be the closest the visitors would come to pulling one back, as Paul Marshall’s men saw out the rest of the match and picked up a valuable 3 points and clean sheet.
FULL TIME: Garforth Town 2 – 0 Goole AFC
A comfortable afternoon in LS25 for the Miners who will be hoping to secure a similar result when the sides meet again next weekend, following Tuesday night’s home tie against Bottesford Town.
