Garforth Town v Maltby Main
16/03/24
NCEL Premier Division
A ruthless display at the Bannister Prentice stadium saw Garforth hammer their opponents 8-0 as the Miners continued their push to finish in the play-off places.
In a game of two contrasting halves, a flurry of goals in the second including a hattrick for Sam Barker meant Garforth cruised to 3 points and a bonus clean sheet in front of a delighted home crowd.
The match took its time to get going, with Matt Antcliff’s opening goal being the only notable event of the first 45 minutes, but a second half blitz in which Garforth bagged 5 goals in 10 minutes resulted in an unforgettable victory.
Antcliff was first to threaten, playing in a dangerous low ball to the front post, but Maltby were able to clear it out as far as Jason Davis who lashed a shot over the bar from range.
The first half progressed with Garforth controlling possession and Louis Hood produced a good stop at his near post after the ball ricocheted off a defender and into the path of Antcliff.
However, continuing to get himself into good positions, Matt took the next chance that came his way as a great pass picked him out inside the box before he drilled the ball low and hard past the goalkeeper and into the side netting, putting the Miners 1-0 up on the afternoon.
Maltby’s Lee Jordan later forced Harry Flatters into action, tipping over to prevent a half volley that resulted from a freekick from finding itself in the back of the net.
Just before the break Antcliff thought he had his second of the game, scoring in similar fashion to his first, but the linesman raised his flag and the goal was chalked off.
HALF TIME: Garforth Town 1-0 Maltby Main
After an uneventful first half, Garforth emerged determined to make the second the polar opposite.
The Miners immediately got to work and doubled their advantage 2 minutes in. Sam Barker was released down the left wing and had a shot saved by Hood but the ball fell to Jay Davis who fired home from inside the area.
And only a minute after Garforth’s second, two became three. Barker again was played in behind his man only this time he made no mistake, curling the ball home into the side netting.
No two ways about it, the visitors totally crumbled under our pressure early in the second half and before we had the chance to take a breath it was in the back of the net again for 4-0. Jordan Emery was the scorer this time, volleying in after the ball dropped to him following a corner.
Paul Marshall’s half time talk must have been an inspirational one as the goals kept on coming. Barker was found in space and he drove down the wing before steadying himself and firing in his second of the game.
Jordan Emery followed suit shortly after, as the Miners got forward again and he guided the ball into the back of the net with a header from close distance. Remarkably, Garforth had put the ball in the back of the net 5 times in just over 10 minutes.
The games’ frantic pace did settle for about 10 minutes as we remained in complete control, but Garforth were constantly looking to exploit the space in behind the opposition’s back line.
And sure enough, the onslaught continued. Anctliff became the next man in blue to bag a brace as he broke free once again and smashed the ball into the top corner for Garforth’s 7th of the afternoon.
Everything Sam Barker touched turned to gold in the second half, and he rounded off a stellar performance with another goal to seal his hattrick, nodding home a cross into the box after another sustained period of pressure from the Miners.
Garforth had it in the back of the net again just before full time, but the linesman flagged for offside. No cherry on the icing on the cake but the Miners won’t mind as they wrapped up a dominant display and secured a thoroughly well-deserved 3 points.
