The two sides met again for the second time in seven days, and in many ways this was a similar encounter to that at the Bannister Prentice Stadium; not a classic, but amid difficult conditions Town found a way to win.
There was one change to the side that beat Bottesford in midweek; Jay Davis returning from injury to replace unavailable captain Dan Coupland. Sam Barker was given the captain's armband.
After scoring a brace a week before, the home side will have been well aware of the threat Jamie Barkway poses from set-pieces and there were two chances for the defender in the opening minutes. His header from Jordan Emery's long-throw went just over the bar, and then from a Davis corner his shot was cleared off the line before another effort from the rebound deflected over. Sam Cable then shot narrowly wide after Charlie Marshall's first time shot from a Davis ball over the top could only find the byeline.
Both sides suffered players having to receive treatment over the course of the afternoon, with Barkway being the first on 19 mins after landing badly from contesting a header in the middle of the park. The defender soldiered on but was forced off ten minutes from the break with Sam Denton taking his place.
Cable shot straight at Goole keeper Dylan Hough when released down the right, before Garforth were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Barker was brought down by two defenders just inside the box. Marshall stepped up for the resulting penalty, but it was too close to Hough who kept his effort out before saving the follow-up.
A rare chance for the hosts arrived on 29 mins when Liam Flanagan's long range effort just cleared the bar. The chances soon resumed down the other end and Marshall went close again after good work by Barker and Rinor Ejupi, his shot just wide of the near post. Shortly after Harry Viggars volleyed wide after a Davis corner was only half-cleared. The final couple of minutes of the half could've seen either side take the lead. A free-kick 25 yards out presented a good opportunity for The Vikings, but Flanaghan's strike was straight at Harry Flatters. Town responded by finally opened the scoring with a well-worked goal. Marshall went down the right and set up Barker inside the box who found the net with a smart low finish across Hough.
The opening minutes of the second half saw Goole enjoy much of the possession, but without really testing Flatters. A cross into the six yard box brought a crucial clearance from Viggars before another free kick in a dangerous position saw Flanaghan head over the bar Matty Ord's delivery. On 74 mins Brice Ghussien shot narrowly over after a mazy run into the box from the right.
After soaking up the pressure, Town hit the hosts on the break to turn the game in our favour. Sixty-second minute substitute Matt Antcliff came up with a moment of the highest quality. Not a man for tap-ins, "The Sheriff" picked up the ball on the right wing, beat his man and unleashed a blistering strike which went in off the underside of the bar. The photo of his teammate's reactions currently on the NCEL homepage say it all, and they were reflected by those of the away supporters in the Dunhill Road stand.
There was a second match-ending injury suffered by the home side five minutes from time when the hard-working Ghussien was forced off. With all substitutes used, they had to see out the game with ten men for the second Saturday in a row.
A minute later it was three to surely take the points back along the M62. Flatters' long ball forward found Marshall who nipped past the last defender and lifted the ball over the onrushing Hough to continue his annual tradition of scoring at this venue. Lee Turner replaced Ejupi on 87 mins to fill in at fullback as Town looked to experience to see the game out. Alfie Proctor's deflected shot was kept out by Flatters at the expense of a corner which came to nothing, leaving Paul Marshall's side to celebrate a sixth win in a row in front of the "Salt and Pepper Pots".
Six wins a row is a feat not achieved by a Garforth side in league matches in 19 years, although your reporter isn't going into the outcome of that season in order not jinx this one. A tough encounter awaits this evening as we look to keep the marvellous run going with title-chasers Emley up next at the Bannister Prentice Stadium (kick-off 7:45pm).
