No goals, but the hunger and determination were there for all to see as Town held eighth-place Handsworth.

Michael Thompson moved to centre-back to replace an injured James Beaston, making way for a return to the first eleven for midfielder Sam Barker. Goalkeeper Toby Wells donned the captain's armband.

The first opportunity of the game fell to Handsworth's Parirs Dixon who brought a good stop from Wells after a left-wing cross wasn't cleared. On 14 mins the visitors had the ball in the net when Jed Phillips headed home Brad Nicholson's cross, but the 'goal' was disallowed for a push on a defender in the build-up. There followed an excellent save by Wells to deny Waide Fairhurst who got on the end of former Town midfielder Tom Claisse's cross.

Garforth tried to get forward, but the final ball had been lacking. Sean Hunter fashioned our first chance on 18 mins, heading well over from Kane Bingley's right wing cross. Fairhurst came close again for The Ambers on 26 mins, Wells clawing away from goal his downward header from a Jamie Green corner.

Bingley headed inches wide from Mick Jones' forward ball on 34 mins, before Hunter came agonisingly close to connecting with Mark Simpson's pass across the six-yard box.

Hunter had another sight of goal four minutes after the break when released by Jordan Chippendale's through-ball. Towering goalkeeper Jan Budtz came out to make the save and force the young striker wide, who's second effort from a narrow angle was into the side netting.

There were a couple of half-chances for the visitors without really testing Wells, then down the other end on 56 mins Simpson was fouled by the last man 20 yards from goal, but referee Michael Coles waved play on. Town's good spell continued; Dan Williams' turn and shot brought a save from Budtz, then there was further controversy moments later when Simpson looked to have been pushed in the box by Phillips, but again Mr Coles wasn't swayed. Our top scorer was then denied by the leg of Budtz when picked out by Hunter.

With The Miners unable to find the net, the visitors then enjoyed a good spell of their own. Wells saved at the second attempt a Joshua Nodder strike on 70 mins, then the same opponent shot narrowly wide of the upright after a good foray through the middle. Back down the other end on 86 mins Chippendale looked to have been pulled down by Nicholson, but again nothing given. The frustration over the officials' curious decision-making boiled over for manager Rob Hunter in added time when prevented by Mr Coles from checking on Matthew Wilkinson who'd gone down injured on the other side of the away dugout. Mr Coles sending the Town gaffer to the stand for his protests. The final chance of the afternoon fell to Phillips who headed over the bar Nicholson's delivery.

A creditable result against a side who've had the better of the last seven meetings, and a point which takes us up another place in the table to 15th. Three big games up next for The Miners against teams below us in the table, starting with the visit of Harrogate Railway on Tuesday evening (kick-off 7:45pm).
